What is Forest School?

Forest School is a learner centered approach to development and learning that encourages holistic development through regular sessions in nature. It's a long-term program that encourages play, exploration, and safe risk-taking, fostering confidence and self-esteem through hands-on experiences in natural settings.

This approach is embraced by thousands of trained practitioners worldwide, who continually refine their techniques to support diverse learners. Forest School draws inspiration from the Scandinavian concept of friluftsliv, or open-air living, and was introduced to the UK in 1993, steadily gaining popularity across the world ever since.

Forest School goes beyond mere knowledge acquisition; it fosters holistic development in learners, including social, emotional, spiritual, physical, and intellectual growth. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, Forest School encourages learners to explore, take risks, and try new things without fear of judgment.

This approach instills a profound connection to the natural world, helping learners understand their place within it. Embracing risk as an essential aspect of growth, Forest School encourages participants to tackle real-world challenges, fostering self-belief and resilience.

We believe that risk encompasses more than just physical danger; it extends to all aspects of life, and overcoming risks is integral to personal growth. Through Forest School, participants emerge as healthy, resilient, creative, and independent learners.

While research supports the benefits of Forest School, it's not just about educational outcomes; both learners and leaders genuinely enjoy and value the experience.

“I feel like a superhero when I'm in Forest School. Climbing trees, finding bugs, and building forts—it's like I'm in my own magical world where anything is possible! ”
